Six steps to get married in Illinois

Obtain the marriage license

Both you and your partner must apply for a marriage license from the County Clerk's office in any Illinois county. You'll need to provide identification, such as a driver's license or passport, and pay the required fee.

Complete the application

Fill out the marriage license application form provided by the County Clerk's office. This typically includes basic information about you and your partner, such as full names, addresses, dates of birth, and social security numbers.

Wait for the waiting period

After submitting your application, there is a waiting period before you can receive your marriage license. In Illinois, this waiting period is typically 24 hours, but it can vary by county. Some counties may waive the waiting period for a fee.

Get

married

Once the waiting period has passed and you've obtained your marriage license, you can get married. You'll need a wedding officiant to perform the ceremony. After the ceremony, the officiant will need to sign the marriage license.

Return the marriage license

Usually within 10 days, you must return the signed marriage license to the County Clerk's office where you obtained it. The Clerk's office will process the license and officially record your marriage.

Obtain

certified copies

After your marriage is recorded, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate from the County Clerk's office for legal purposes, such as changing your name or updating your marital status with government agencies.
